Running Pace Calculator
Convert between pace, speed and finish time, and predict your race time for another distance from a recent result — 5K, 10K, half or marathon.
How to calculate running pace
Pace is time per unit distance — minutes per kilometre or per mile. Enter a pace or a speed and this calculator converts it to every other form and gives the finish time for common race distances, so you can plan sessions and races around one number.
Pace vs speed
Pace (min/km) and speed (km/h) describe the same effort from opposite ends: lower pace means higher speed. Runners usually think in pace, treadmills and bikes in speed — the converter lets you move between them without doing the arithmetic.
How to predict race time with Riegel
The Riegel formula predicts a race time from a known one using t₂ = t₁ × (d₂/d₁)^1.06. Enter a recent race distance and time, choose the target distance, and it estimates your time — most reliable within about double the known distance.
Why race predictions are estimates
Riegel assumes you're equally trained for the new distance and that endurance fades at a typical rate. Stepping from 5K to marathon needs long-run training the formula can't see, so use the prediction as a target to train toward, not a guarantee.
How to train for a target pace
Once you know your goal pace, training is about spending the right time at the right efforts — easy runs, tempo at threshold, intervals and a long run. GetMyCoach turns your target into a structured, progressive plan built around your week.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the race time predictor work?
- It uses the Riegel formula, t₂ = t₁ × (d₂/d₁)^1.06, to scale a known race result to a new distance. It's most accurate within roughly 2× the distance you enter.
- What pace should I run for a sub-X finish?
- Enter your target distance and switch the pace field to see the required pace for a finish time — for example the min/km needed for a sub-60-minute 10K.
- Is min/km or min/mile better?
- Neither — use whichever your runs are measured in. The converter shows both plus km/h and mph from a single input.
- Why is my marathon prediction slower than I expected?
- Predictions from short races assume marathon-specific endurance you may not have trained yet. Treat the number as a goal that long-run training brings within reach.
